My love for Northern Soul had begun. It was a few months before I asked permission to go, to which I got a resounding NO! My parents liked dancing; they regularly went out dancing ballroom and jive. So, it didn’t take too long to talk them into letting me go.  

I became a regular every Saturday night at Wigan Casino from midnight to 08:00 am. When we would then travel to other Northern Soul all day events on the Sunday, at venues such as Blackpool Mecca, Manchester Ritz, Blackburn, Stoke and Southport to name but a few. The camaraderie was amazing. Everyone talked about the music, the DJ’s, new tunes, clothes, moves, especially the gymnastic moves which have always been difficult to achieve. Over the following 3 years this was how I spent my weekends. Even after starting work as an apprentice hairdresser, I would work the busy Saturday then get ready for Wigan. It was always exciting waiting to see who would turn up. That was how it was back then.    

In September 1981 I took the opportunity to take a job based in Spain. I loved it and stayed 5 years. What I didn’t know at the outset was Northern Soul didn’t exist in Spain. But the job was good, the weather even better, my life changed a lot and with that Northern Soul became nothing more than a wonderful memory.

Fast forward 42 years to 2023. I thought Northern Soul was a thing of the past. However, out walking my dog, a neighbour told me he was arranging a Northern Soul night at the local club, he asked if I was interested! I was excited about the prospect of revisiting that wonderful period of my youth. I wondered whether I would remember the tunes and the moves, and whether l would be able to do them. 

I had a great time that night. I was told many times how good I dance and how people couldn’t stop watching me dance. From that first event in August 2023 to today every time I dance, no matter where I am, I am asked if I will teach people how to do the moves. In September 2024 I went to the World Northern Soul Dancce Championships event at Blackpool Tower. I entered the dance competition and I reached the quarter finals, I was so pleased it was my first and only dance competition. 

 In August 2025, I posted a video of me dancing to the infamous Northern Soul tune by Frank Wilson – ‘Do I Love You’ I was on the streets of Faversham at the annual Hop Festival. That video went viral getting over 1 million views. Now when I go to Northern Soul events, people tell me I am “Northern Soul royalty”, or that “you’re a famous Northern Soul dancer, you are”. I am continually asked to teach people the moves. I would never have believed that going to Wigan Casino in 1975 would have led to me becoming a Northern Soul Dance Coach 50 years later.
